ORIENTATION & MOBILITY SERVICES

Orientation and Mobility is another service option that is offered to visually impaired adults. Orientation teaches individuals to be more aware of their environment which helps them pick up on environmental cues that will aid them in independent travel. Mobility instructors help individuals navigate familiar and unfamiliar environments both indoors and out. Mobility instructors help an individual determine if a white cane would be beneficial for the type of travel they want to do. They will demonstrate a variety of canes such as the folding cane, a support cane or a long straight cane. If a cane is not yet necessary or desired, the Mobility instructor will teach sighted guides techniques so the visually impaired individual understands the best way to have a sighted person assist them. Mobility instructors also explore sun shields to reduce glare outdoors or in. If the individual has a need to identify objects or signs at a distance, the Mobility instructor will also explore telescopic devices with the individual. Hand held monocular or head born telescopic devices (bi-optics) may be explored if deemed appropriate.
