VABVI Executive Director

The Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (VABVI) seeks an Executive Director. Headquartered, in South Burlington, VT, VABVI is the only private, nonprofit, statewide agency, providing training, service and support to infants, children and adults of all ages throughout Vermont. The successful candidate will possess a vision for the future and strive to fulfill a mission that encourages and assists blind and visually impaired people to achieve or maintain their independence and quality of life.

General Responsibilities

The candidate is responsible for:

Program Planning - Implements and evaluates programs and services to align with the organization’s vision and mission goals focused through the strategic planning process developed by the Board of Directors.


Policy Making - Embraces change, innovation and growth of the agency for all stakeholders.
 

Fiscal Control – Oversees an annual budget of $4.1 million, ensuring sustainability through strategic planning, analysis, and reporting. Nonprofit and/or business experience preferred.
 

Personnel Management -Inspires and supports staff, fosters organizational culture, and develops Board and staff policies through a culture that promotes professional development.
 

Community Engagements -Represents our staff and Board of Directors, amplifying our voice through media and speaking opportunities while coordinating with other state, school and private organizations.
 

Educating Public Officials -Establishes working relationships and collaborative communications with community groups, new funders, politicians and other nonprofits to actively secure support for our services.
 

 Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

A master’s degree in rehabilitation, education, business or nonprofit management in the area of visual impairments or relevant experience.
 

A minimum of 5 years of progressive supervisory experience, with a focus on strategic and operational planning, revenue generation, and financial oversight within the field of blind rehabilitation, other fields of rehabilitation or relevant experiences.
 

An understanding of the multi-disciplinary team approach required in the rehabilitation and education of individuals with disabilities along with knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to collaborative efforts.
 

A working knowledge of rehabilitation and special education of the visually impaired with respect to federal and state laws.
 

A knowledge of and experience with non-profit fundraising, including funding sources, assisting with plans, and participating in fundraising activities.
 

Exceptional communication, relationship-building and interpersonal skills. 
 

Experience with a Board of Directors as it relates to a mission/vision statement, and a strategic plan. To act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors relating to internal and external issues. Experience as a partner with the Board of Directors to set organizational priorities, strategies, polices and to work with the Board of Directors for membership growth and development.
 

Experience with assessing, analyzing and mitigating potential risks to clients, staff, volunteers, as well as property, finances, reputation, and public image.       
 

Salary range is $120,000 to $150,000 depending on experience.
