Marking Stairs

|

Paint/tape a two-inch wide strip on the top surface of each step closest to the “toe.”

Unless another color is specified for a visually impaired person, generally a bright yellow paint or vinyl tape will highlight indoor and outdoor stairs, etc. ( If tape is used, it is important to regularly check the tape to make sure it is not pealing up and potentially becoming a tripping hazard)

If there is a need for “grip” to avoid slipping on the steps, paint stores will mix sand into paint to provide a textured surface.

If indoor stairs have a rubber-like tread, you may apply the paint directly over each tread as outlined above.

Additional Resources:

Aubuchon’s Hardware recommended Porch or Floor paint for marking indoor stairs.

Aubuchon’s also recommended Rust-Oleum or Krylon spray paint for outdoor stairs and curbing (available in bright yellow). This is permanent paint which can withstand outdoor temperatures.

Reflective, non-skid tread tape (also referred to as “safety tape” or “anti-slip tape”) can be ordered online. Choose the 2” width in a contrasting color (e.g. for dark colored stairs, choose yellow; for light colored stairs, choose black).

Please do not hesitate to contact the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired with any questions you may have regarding appropriate environmental marking techniques.
