Infant / Toddler

Our itinerant Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) and Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialists (COMS) begin work with infants, children and their families as soon as a visual impairment is discovered. When a child is born with little or no vision, care must be taken to ensure she or he learns the skills necessary to keep up with sighted peers. Our TVIs and COMS work closely with other organizations (such as the Family Infant Toddler Project, Children with Special Health Needs, etc.) to create an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) that is unique to each child and family.

VABVI instructors begin to work with infants as soon as possible, assisting the family in learning to use other senses to gather and share information about the world around them. Many resources are available to families of children who are blind or visually impaired. Instructors can help point you in the right direction in your home or daycare setting.
