Orientation and Mobility

A Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) is trained to help you learn to travel in your home and community with vision loss. The COMS will work with you to assess your needs and make recommendations to help maximize your safety at home and when traveling. Together, you will determine if a white cane may assist you in your travels. These can come in a variety of models including a rigid, folding or safety cane style. COMS also teach individuals how best to guide individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Learning to recognize auditory and tactual information in your environment will help you maximize your remaining vision. Many clients find they can still travel in their community with confidence even when no vision remains.
