White Cane Awareness Day 2023 Rutland

White Cane Awareness Day celebration Friday, October 13, 2023

RUTLAND – The Vermont Association for the Blind & Visually Impaired and the Vermont Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired will host a celebration of this year’s 60th annual White Cane Safety Awareness Day on Friday, October 13th from 12-2pm at the Asa Bloomer Building atrium at 88 Merchants Row, Rutland, VT.

On October 6, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson and the U.S. Congress signed a joint resolution and proclaimed that October 15th be celebrated as White Cane Safety Day every year.  The white cane is a symbol of strength and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Participants of all ages and backgrounds will have the opportunity to use the white cane as they walk in downtown Rutland learning first-hand what it is like to make their way in the world as a person who is blind or visually impaired.

The walk will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.  All are welcome.
